Public feedback opportunities continue for west Phoenix transit expansion

Phoenix City Council to take action early next year

PHOENIX – The community will have additional opportunities to learn about and provide input on expanded transit options for the Capitol Mall area and west Phoenix. Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix invite the public to attend upcoming meetings to hear updates on route options for the Capitol Light Rail Extension (CAPEX) and its connection to the I-10 West Extension (10WEST). (See attached map.) These projects would extend light rail service from downtown Phoenix to the Arizona State Capitol area (CAPEX) and travel along the I-10 freeway to ultimately connect with the Desert Sky Transit Center at 79th Avenue/Thomas (10WEST).

Phoenix City Council is expected to take action on the future of CAPEX and its connection to 10WEST in late January 2026. The Council will either adopt an updated CAPEX route as the first step to extend light rail to west Phoenix or vote to re-evaluate high-capacity transit alternatives to serve the area.

Public input gathered during this engagement period will help inform the Council's decision. Community members are invited to hear project updates and share feedback through multiple opportunities:

About the Capitol Extension: The Capitol Extension (CAPEX) is a planned light rail expansion extending west from the existing Valley Metro Rail system in downtown Phoenix toward the State Capitol area. This extension will ultimately connect to the future I-10 West Extension, serving a strong ridership base and creating an important connection to future expansions in west Phoenix. Learn more at valleymetro.org/CAPEX.

About I-10 West Extension: The 10-mile I-10 West (10WEST) extension will connect the greater West Valley to the existing Valley Metro Rail system. This project is unique and will see light rail trains traveling in the median of Interstate 10, before ultimately crossing to the north side of the freeway to a terminus at the existing Desert Sky Transit Center.
